2. Bridgemate Functions for the small, blank keys: a. Accept Result (ACCEPT) After the scorekeeper (usually North) has entered the board number, contract, declarer, and result; either player from the other partnership (usually East or West) reviews the results to verify that they are right. When the results are correct, the reviewer presses the small, blank key at the far right side under “ACCEPT”. If the result is incorrect, the reviewer explains the reason the result seems incorrect. When both sides agree that a correction is necessary, the scorekeeper presses the “CANCEL” button at the bottom of the key pad as many times as necessary (e. g., three times to correct the board number) and reenters the corrected information. Then the reviewer checks the corrected information. b. Call director (CALL TD) Press the small, blank key under “CALL TD”. A director call message indicating your section and table number will appear on the director’s computer. The director’s computer will make a door knocking sound calling the director’s attention to your director call. c. Correct player names (CORREC) after (NAMES) If any player name is incorrect, you may correct it from your table. After you confirm that your Bridgemate is displaying the correct round number (If you are uncertain, please, call the director BEFORE you make a correction.), press the small, blank key under “CORREC”. The new display will let you enter a corrected player number for the player whose name is incorrect. After the correction, notify the director to make sure that the corrected player name reaches the game records in the scoring program. d. View player names (NAMES) Press the small, blank key under “NAMES” at the bottom of the display. Your Bridgemate will show the names of the players who should be seated at your table for the current round. If both Names from either partnership are incorrect, call the director. If one player name is incorrect, you may correct it at the table (See “CORREC”, above.) 3. Lesson Hands posted on the club web site now include links to related web sites. Return to Menu Reporting scoring errors: Follow the instructions on the club web site, or . . . Contact the club director before noon on the Friday after the game. The director will check for errors entering scores and inspect travelers for unusual scores that may be mistakes. To correct a score in favor of the player reporting a mistake, the director will often request confirmation from the pair whose score will become less favorable as a result of the correction. Yet, when making score adjustments, the director may rule in favor of a pair who keep personal scores when the opponents do not keep personal scores. Own the Hand; Play the Hand

East–West own this hand! They have a nine-card spade fit, and the hand
with shorter spades has a ruffing value in clubs which the opponents
may disclose as “their suit.” If East–West discover their spade fit,
they should bid to 3. The Law of Total Tricks recommends playing at or
above the three-level (nine trick contract level) with a nine-card fit.
Thus, if North–South wish to declare, East-West should force them to
  the four-level or higher.

       Possible Auction:

      North    East    South    West
     Pass 1NT 2 * 2
     Pass § 2NT # Pass ‡ 3 **
     Pass 3 †† Pass §§ ##
* DONT overcall showing a two-suited hand with clubs and a suit with a higher rank. South has several objectives. One of them involves game. 1- Play a two-level minor suit partscore. 2- Push the opponents from their 1NT contract to some other contract that may offer chances for simpler, more effective defense. 3- “Wrong side” their contract so that the 1NT opening hand is the dummy and responder declares. 4- Put them off balance by disrupting their 1NT response and rebid system. 5- Help the opening side land in a poor contract. 6- If advancer has an amazing hand (e. g., all of the HCP not held by East and South), North will make some move towards game. † Jacoby transfer to 2. § If West had passed or doubled, North would have advanced the 2 DONT overcall by bidding 2 to show holdings in every other suit the same length as clubs or longer than clubs. This advance would have been an attempt to improve the fit while still playing a two-level partscore. # East–West use doubleton showing super accept responses to Jacoby. 2NT shows four or five spade cards (a nine-card or ten-card spade fit) with a club doubleton. West now has good information for placing the contract. 3 would have shown a doubleton diamond, and 3 would show a doubleton heart. If the transfer had been to hearts, all responses would be one step lower. ‡ South, even with the second best hand at the table, has nothing to add to the conversation. ** West repeats the transfer to spades, still intending to stop in the spade partscore. †† East, having made the distribution showing super accept, accepts the transfer and leaves matters to West. With a fifth spade, East might consider 4, but that action risks risks mirror distribution where the spade fit may deliver no extra tricks. §§ With neither fit nor strength information from North, any action by South would be blind. The unlimited West hand knows East’s high card strength to within a jack and black suit distribution within a card. West is well placed to bid game or offer a penalty double if either action will lead to a good East–West result. ## West must decide whether to commit the partnership to a spade game. With five spades, East might have bid 4 rather then 3. West’s well placed club king combined with East’s club ruffing value look good. The weakness of West’s spades and the partnership’s 19-21 HCP total both argue that the three-level is high enough. West’s advance to 4 would be very aggressive. Success would require a “gin hand” like the one East holds and either a defensive slip or some very good declarer play. +140 or +170 for passing is a good board when compared to +90 for playing 1NT or -90 for letting North–South declare 2 (the likely result when West passes over South’s 2 overcall). - Return to Results, Recap, or Menu. - Return to a Pair Summary by picking an "Untitled" page.
