     2. Bridgemate Functions for the small, blank keys:

        a. Accept Result (ACCEPT)

           After the scorekeeper (usually North) has entered the board number, contract, declarer, and
           result; either player from the other partnership (usually East or West) reviews the results to
           verify that they are right. When the results are correct, the reviewer presses the small, blank
           key at the far right side under “ACCEPT”. If the result is incorrect, the reviewer explains the
           reason the result seems incorrect. When both sides agree that a correction is necessary, the
           scorekeeper presses the “CANCEL” button at the bottom of the key pad as many times as necessary
          (e. g., three times to correct the board number) and reenters the corrected information. Then the
           reviewer checks the corrected information.

        b. Call director (CALL TD)

           Press the small, blank key under “CALL TD”. A director call message indicating your section and
           table number will appear on the director’s computer. The director’s computer will make a door
           knocking sound calling the director’s attention to your director call.

        c. Correct player names (CORREC) after (NAMES)

           If any player name is incorrect, you may correct it from your table. After you confirm that
           your Bridgemate is displaying the correct round number (If you are uncertain, please, call the
           director BEFORE you make a correction.), press the small, blank key under “CORREC”. The new
           display will let you enter a corrected player  number for the player whose name is incorrect.
           After the correction, notify the director to make sure that the corrected player name reaches
           the game records in the scoring program.

        d. View player names (NAMES)

           Press the small, blank key under “NAMES” at the bottom of the display. Your Bridgemate will show
           the names of the players who should be seated at your table for the current round. If both names from either
           partnership are incorrect, call the director. If one player name is incorrect, you may correct it at the
           table (See “CORREC”, above.)

     Reporting scoring errors: 

     Follow the instructions on the club web site, or . . .

     Contact the club director before noon on the Friday after the
     game. The director will check for errors entering scores and
     inspect travelers for unusual scores that may be mistakes. To
     correct a score in favor of the player reporting a mistake,
     the director will often request confirmation from the pair
     whose score will become less favorable as a result of the
     correction. Yet, when making score adjustments, the director
     may rule in favor of a pair who keep personal scores when the
     opponents do not keep personal scores.

  Open Your Opener

  North–South can score game in spades or notrump, but not if the auction
  goes, “Pass–Pass–Pass–Pass”. Either North or South must open to reach
  even a partscore contract. My partner and I would both open the South
  hand 1NT in first seat. After that, a Stayman auction would lead to 3♠
  or 4♠ depending upon how aggressive North felt. Such aggressive methods
  are not necessary. North–South can easily reach a spade contract on the
  normal auction, below.

  * Here is the critical position. With nearly full opening strength,
    North has the option to open after two passes. Possible situations
    include both the case where each player holds about 9–11 HCP and the
    situation where South and West are quite weak and East holds twenty
    points or so.

    In the first case, each side can probably win seven or eight tricks
    declaring in its best denomination. North must open the bidding to
    secure the North–South partscore. East will probably be too weak to
    compete for the partscore. If North passes, East may open in fourth
    seat and secure an East–West partscore.

    In the second case, East–West may have game. Again, North must open
    the bidding with less than full values. Now, North’s objective is to
    spoil the unobstructed auction by which East–West may bid to a game
   (or partscore) that they can make. Notice that East’s most powerful
    call is a takeout double. Thus, West will all but certainly bid over
    East’s double. A successful penalty double is essentially impossible.

  † South certainly owes North—who may hold any strength from 10–11 HCP
    up to something just shy of nine winners in hand—a response. The one
    spade call is perfect. The fifth spade offers some insurance against
    a pass with a misfit and a subminimum hand by North. If North rebids
    showing extra (or even full) values, lively chances for some game
    come into view.

  § The spade raise showing a full opener is a slight overbid, but the ♠J,
    ♦Q10, and ruffing value in clubs may justify claiming a twelfth or
    thirteenth point for the single raise. After the light third seat
    opening, passing here is also acceptable. After South’s initial pass,
    a game is quite unlikely.

  # How the auction will develop from here is subject to speculation. If
    South takes great pride in the ninth trump, the minor suit honors,
    and the diamond ruffing value, se might blast directly to game. South
    might also take a pessimistic view and pass 2♠. A middle course where
    South makes a game try below 3♠ may prove the most popular auction.

  Whether North–South reach the thin game is not the point. That the hand
  belongs to North–South and that they should declare some contract is.
  Making game in either notrump or spades requires the unusual line of
  cashing the ♠A to drop the offside singleton ♠K and than playing the
  hand all out. Finding that approach at the table would be most unusual.
  Most declarers would play more sanely and win seven to nine tricks.
