Bridgemate Functions for the small, blank keys: a. Accept Result (ACCEPT) After the scorekeeper (usually North) has entered the board number, contract, declarer, and result; either player from the other partnership (usually East or West) reviews the results to verify that they are right. When the results are correct, the reviewer presses the small, blank key at the far right side under “ACCEPT”. If the result is incorrect, the reviewer explains the reason the result seems incorrect. When both sides agree that a correction is necessary, the scorekeeper presses the “CANCEL” button at the bottom of the key pad as many times as necessary (e. g., three times to correct the board number) and reenters the corrected information. Then the reviewer checks the corrected information. b. Call director (CALL TD) Press the small, blank key under “CALL TD”. A director call message indicating your section and table number will appear on the director’s computer. The director’s computer will make a door knocking sound calling the director’s attention to your director call. c. Correct player names (CORREC) after (NAMES) If any player name is incorrect, you may correct it from your table. After you confirm that your Bridgemate is displaying the correct round number (If you are uncertain, please, call the director BEFORE you make a correction.), press the small, blank key under “CORREC”. The new display will let you enter a corrected player number for the player whose name is incorrect. After the correction, notify the director to make sure that the corrected player name reaches the game records in the scoring program. d. View player names (NAMES) Press the small, blank key under “NAMES” at the bottom of the display. Your Bridgemate will show the names of the players who should be seated at your table for the current round. If both names from either partnership are incorrect, call the director. If one player name is incorrect, you may correct it at the table (See “CORREC”, above.) 3. Lesson Hands posted on the club web site now include links to related web sites. Contact the club director before noon on the Friday after the game. The director will check for errors entering scores and inspect travelers for unusual scores that may be mistakes. To correct a score in favor of the player reporting a mistake, the director will often request confirmation from the pair whose score will become less favorable as a result of the correction. Yet, when making score adjustments, the director may rule in favor of a pair who keep personal scores when the opponents do not keep personal scores. With Values to Open, Open

Playing rubber bridge, there is no penalty for passing a hand out. Not
so at any form of duplicate scoring. On nearly any hand, one side or
the other (maybe, both sides) can win seven tricks in one or more
denominations. If your partnership can make a partscore, and you pass
the hand out, you will receive the same raw score of zero as your
opponents. When the hand’s scoring compares your zero with the other
score(s) on the same hand, that zero will contend very strongly for
the worst score on the hand—a zero at matchpoints or a negative IMP
score. That will give your opponents an excellent result—perhaps, as
good as though they had bid and made a slam.

Thus, if your partner has passed, you must strive to open the bidding.
This opening bid probably serves two or three purposes. It may:

  - . . . suggest a contract.
  - . . . keep the opponents out of the auction when they own the hand.
  - . . . suggest an opening lead.
  - . . . extract a bid from partner which leads to a good contract.
  - . . . push the opponents to bid too much.
  - . . . force the opponents to use less accurate defensive bidding
methods that may leave them in a poor contract.

An opening bid achieving any two or three of the above goals is a much
stronger action than passing. If your side plays and makes any contract,
your result is far better than the zero raw score which may be the best
likely result if you pass. If you open and the opponents out bid you,
they will have had a more difficult, less accurate auction than the one
they would have had if you had passed. This may improve your result
  several ways:

  - You may defeat a poor contract to earn a plus score
  - Your opening bid may help your partner play better defense. You may
yield fewer tricks to the declarer so that you score better than your
    counterparts at other tables.
  - You may declare when your opponents own the hand. That may yield a
plus score you do not deserve for a great result. If the opponents
defeat your contract, you may still get a good score if they could
have earned more points by declaring.

Thus, in third seat your should usually open with any hand including
8-10 points or more and a suit with a high honor or two—a suit that may
be a good lead for your partner.

Fourth seat is more complicated. Perhaps, your opponents have made a
mistake by passing when one of them should have bid. When this is true,
your fourth seat pass can sometimes (rarely but not never) earn a great
score because your pass exploited a mistake by the opponents. Do not
expect this party favor to come around very often.

Essentially, the standard guideline for bidding in fourth seat is more
convoluted than the simpler third seat case. If the opponents own the
hand, and you open; that gives them a second bite at the apple. They
may compete for the contract or push you too high. The side with more
spades has a huge advantage in this partscore fight. Thus, the rule
below balances the tension between high card strength and spades:

Add the number of spades in your hand to the number of high card points.
If this total (Pearson Points) is more than fifteen, open in fourth
seat. If the Pearson Point total is less than fifteen, pass. This guide
is not perfect, some timid players will let you steal the hand when
they should declare. If you recognize a timid pair, you should open
against them with fewer Pearson Points. When you believe, the opponents
are better than you and your partner, perhaps, you should require an
extra Pearson Point or three to open in fourth seat. These two cases
are examples of “playing your opponents.”

Especially in third seat and often in fourth seat, you should usually
open any normal, full value opening hand. However, some weaker hands
will also require action along the lines described, above.

On this board, North has a marginal opening bid. Because of the very
aggressive methods my partner and I use, we would open North’s hand 1NT
in any seat at any vulnerability. Many others would open 1 planning to
rebid 1, 1NT, to raise partner, or to pass if the opponents enter the
  auction.

Note that North–South own this hand. They can make a contract at a
higher level than East–West can safely bid. Yet, if North and South
both pass, West will open 1. That opening may lead to a successful
  East–West contract making either 1 or 3 when North-South can go +140
in hearts. To prevent this disaster, after North’s pass, South must
open this hand in third seat. 1 is probably best.

  Open Your Opener!

Even though East–West have 21 HCP to 19 HCP for North-South, the North–
South pair owns this hand. They can make 4 or 2NT. The most East–West
can make is 2 or 3.

After North’s first seat pass, some few East players might open. Even
with our very aggressive bidding style, my partner and I would both
pass. In third seat, South must open something! In most methods, South
will open either 1 or 1. North–South should reach a diamond partial
after either start. The traveler (above) shows a worst case disaster
that could and did happen after South’s third seat pass.
