Bridgemate Functions for the small, blank keys: a. Accept Result (ACCEPT) After the scorekeeper (usually North) has entered the board number, contract, declarer, and result; either player from the other partnership (usually East or West) reviews the results to verify that they are right. When the results are correct, the reviewer presses the small, blank key at the far right side under “ACCEPT”. If the result is incorrect, the reviewer explains the reason the result seems incorrect. When both sides agree that a correction is necessary, the scorekeeper presses the “CANCEL” button at the bottom of the key pad as many times as necessary (e. g., three times to correct the board number) and reenters the corrected information. Then the reviewer checks the corrected information. b. Call director (CALL TD) Press the small, blank key under “CALL TD”. A director call message indicating your section and table number will appear on the director’s computer. The director’s computer will make a door knocking sound calling the director’s attention to your director call. c. Correct player names (CORREC) after (NAMES) If any player name is incorrect, you may correct it from your table. After you confirm that your Bridgemate is displaying the correct round number (If you are uncertain, please, call the director BEFORE you make a correction.), press the small, blank key under “CORREC”. The new display will let you enter a corrected player number for the player whose name is incorrect. After the correction, notify the director to make sure that the corrected player name reaches the game records in the scoring program. d. View player names (NAMES) Press the small, blank key under “NAMES” at the bottom of the display. Your Bridgemate will show the names of the players who should be seated at your table for the current round. If both names from either partnership are incorrect, call the director. If one player name is incorrect, you may correct it at the table (See “CORREC”, above.) 3. Lesson Hands posted on the club web site now include links to related web sites. Contact the club director before noon on the Friday after the game. The director will check for errors entering scores and inspect travelers for unusual scores that may be mistakes. To correct a score in favor of the player reporting a mistake, the director will often request confirmation from the pair whose score will become less favorable as a result of the correction. Yet, when making score adjustments, the director may rule in favor of a pair who keep personal scores when the opponents do not keep personal scores. PASS 0.83 2.17 Pass Out 9-Johnson-Jones vs 6-Adams-Hill

  Bid!

Note that there are thirteen tricks available on every deal. With the
most even division of tricks, each side can win six tricks to make an
offensive book. With twelve tricks played and six for each side, that
thirteenth trick will give one side a seventh trick to make a one bid.
Simultaneously, the seventh trick for one side limits the other side
to six tricks, failing to make any bid.

When strength is divided quite evenly, both sides may be able to win
eight, nine, or even more tricks when a hand is quite distributional.
Passing a hand out (or worse, allowing the opponents to make their
contract when “We” can make our own, perhaps higher, contract will
show a substantial loss. Any plus score beats all minus scores (all
contracts bid and made by opponents) and zero scores (earned when both
  sides pass a hand out).

Thus, passing in third or fourth seat is a large bet that (1) the
opponents can make something, (2) “We” cannot win seven or more tricks
in any denomination, and (3) this board is not one of the very common
boards where each side can win seven or more tricks so that the good,
positive score will go to the side who bids something. On this hand,
  North-South can make 1 or 1, and East-West can make 1 or 1NT. Since
they are vulnerable, North-South cannot safely compete to the two-level.
They risk a loss (-100) larger than the East-West gain for 1NT (+90).

  Possible Auction:

     Pass 1 * Pass †
     1 § All Pass
* Some players do bid aggressively enough to open hands like this one. Many would want one (or both) of the black queens replaced with a king before they’d consider this an opening hand in first or second seat. Yet, this hand is a clear opening bid in third seat. After two passes, open one club, pass most responses, and rebid 1NT after a 1 response. The objective when opening light in third or fourth seat is not a game contract. The aiming point is a partscore or driving the opponents to over bid—both leading to a plus score. † Without South’s opening bid, most players would gladly open this hand 1 in third seat. In first, second, or fourth seat passing will be the popular—usually correct—action. With an opening in South, passing becomes the preferred action. In fourth seat, passing is the likely best choice. The risk that the opponents will have a successful spade contract at the same level as any successful East-West contract is too high. One should have fifteen or more Pearson Points (Sum HCP with the number of spades in the hand.) to open in fourth seat. § Especially since South should have a full opening bid, leaving lively game prospects open, North will respond 1. South, lacking that full opening bid, faces a quandry. Passing may miss a game when North has a good hand (say, thirteen points or more). Yet, when North has a minimum one-over-one response, 1 (if North has five or more hearts) may be the last plus score. Avoiding this guess is the reason that most players would pass the South hand in first or second seat while gladly opening it 1 in third seat, only. Having over bid, what should South do? The choice between passing (to avoid getting too high at the risk of playing in a 4-2 “fit”) and bidding 1NT (to reach a better denomination at the risk of getting too high) is a close one. Choosing between the options is mostly a matter of who you are playing against (Will they defend well?) and how lucky you feel (Does partner have extra hearts, extra HCP, both, or neither?) Next time South gets a hand like this in second seat, memories of this dilemma may steer hir towards a more practical pass. Guidelines for Opening Bids In First or Second Seat: Tend to have full opening values, about 10-14 HCP or more with twelve or more total points and two or more defensive quick tricks (first or second round winners like aces or king-queen combinations). In Third Seat: Tend to have one of the following reasons (in order of decreasing desirability) to bid . . . - Have a full opening hand able to open in first or second seat. - Have a hand worth a sound one-level overcall while bidding a suit headed by one or more defensive quick tricks so that partner may lead the suit safely even with poor support. - Have slightly less than full opening values in a hand unsuitable for a weak-two opening bid. Such hands should include about 9-11 points with about seven and one-half to eight and one-half or fewer losers. Usually, the opened suit should indicate a safe lead for partner. - Very rarely, have a psychic hand barely adequate for a single raise of partner’s opening bid. Usually, partner’s lead of the psyched suit should not prove an embarrassment. In fourth seat: Follow all of the non-psychic reasons for third seat openings except that with less than a full valued opening hand, open at the one-level only when holding fifteen or more Pearson Points. - Return to Results, Recap, or Menu. - Return to a Pair Summary by picking an "Untitled" page.
