     2. Bridgemate Functions for the small, blank keys:

        a. Accept Result (ACCEPT)

           After the scorekeeper (usually North) has entered the board number, contract, declarer, and
           result; either player from the other partnership (usually East or West) reviews the results to
           verify that they are right. When the results are correct, the reviewer presses the small, blank
           key at the far right side under “ACCEPT”. If the result is incorrect, the reviewer explains the
           reason the result seems incorrect. When both sides agree that a correction is necessary, the
           scorekeeper presses the “CANCEL” button at the bottom of the key pad as many times as necessary
          (e. g., three times to correct the board number) and reenters the corrected information. Then the
           reviewer checks the corrected information.

        b. Call director (CALL TD)

           Press the small, blank key under “CALL TD”. A director call message indicating your section and
           table number will appear on the director’s computer. The director’s computer will make a door
           knocking sound calling the director’s attention to your director call.

        c. Correct player names (CORREC) after (NAMES)

           If any player name is incorrect, you may correct it from your table. After you confirm that
           your Bridgemate is displaying the correct round number (If you are uncertain, please, call the
           director BEFORE you make a correction.), press the small, blank key under “CORREC”. The new
           display will let you enter a corrected player number for the player whose name is incorrect.
           After the correction, notify the director to make sure that the corrected player name reaches
           the game records in the scoring program.

        d. View player names (NAMES)

           Press the small, blank key under “NAMES” at the bottom of the display. Your Bridgemate will show
           the names of the players who should be seated at your table for the current round. If both names
           from either partnership are incorrect, call the director. If one player name is incorrect, you
           may correct it at the table (See “CORREC”, above.)

     Reporting scoring errors: 

     Follow the instructions on the club web site, or . . .

     Contact the club director before noon on the Friday after the
     game. The director will check for errors entering scores and
     inspect travelers for unusual scores that may be mistakes. To
     correct a score in favor of the player reporting a mistake,
     the director will often request confirmation from the pair
     whose score will become less favorable as a result of the
     correction. Yet, when making score adjustments, the director
     may rule in favor of a pair who keep personal scores when the
     opponents do not keep personal scores.

  Bid Game and Make Game

  Game bonuses are the most frequent way to earn large, winning scores.
  With any form of duplicate scoring, failing to bid and make your game
  contracts is a sure path to a lower score at the end of a session. Bid
  your game contracts. Then, play them well enough to bring home those
  game bonuses.

  * 2♣ is strong and artificial. It shows a balanced hand stronger than
    21 HCP or an unbalanced hand with four or more defensive tricks and
    eight and a half or more offensive winners. Other opening two bids
    show unbalanced hands too weak for an opening one-bid that normally
    have six to seven offensive playing tricks.

    Partnerships who play all opening two-bids as strong and natural will
    open this hand 2♠. The strong, natural 2♠ opening bid is alertable.
    The vast majority of duplicate players use 2♣ (or 1♣) as their only
    strong, forcing opening bid. Strong, natural 2♦, 2♥, and 2♠ opening
    bids require an alert. They are so unusual that the opponents may not
    realize that they are strong bids without an alert.

  † 2♦ is a “waiting bid.” In most partnerships, it shows any hand with
    less than slam forcing strength (about 9-11 HCP) after opener’s 2♣
    opening bid. Other treatments for the 2♦ response exist. Many pairs
    use 2♦ as a negative response showing a hand, like this one, that
    would pass after an opening one-bid.

  § North shows a hand that needs help from partner to make either game
    or slam. With game in hand (say, replace a spade spot with the ♠Q and
    add a side suit king), opener would rebid 3♠ to show a game forcing
    hand with five or more spades that needs two tricks from the dummy to
    to make a slam.

  # South shows a hand with trump support that will usually produce one
    trick. With a weaker hand, bidding 3♠ with trump support is best.
    With a bare minimum (only 8.5 offensive winners) hand, Opener may
    pass the 3♠ response. If a partnership has a “double negative” rebid
    for responder, any weaker hand without trump support should use the
   “double negative” rebid. If responder has a hand that will yield two
    or more additional tricks for declarer, rebidding a new suit or 3NT
    will encourage opener to consider a slam contract.


                            Play of the Hand

  East will probably lead either a trump or a heart. A trump lead kills
  West’s ♠Q, assuring nine tricks for declarer. A heart lead shines a
  spotlight on the winning line of play: Ruff two hearts on the table.

  After winning the opening lead, do not pull trumps. Cash the ♥A (or win
  the first trick with it) and lead a small heart, ruffing on the table.
  Return to the closed hand with a side suit ace, lead the last small
  heart, again ruffing on the table. If the second ruff wins, lead the
  remianing spade from the table and finesse against a possible ♠Q in the
  West hand for an overtrick.

  Do not worry about a defensive overruff. If, worst case, a defender
  ruffs with the ♠Q and leads a trump, you will then have six trumps,
  three side suit aces, and one heart ruff for ten winners. You must
  delay pulling trumps. The delay retains a trump for ruffing the third
  heart. This play protects against the worst case where West overruffs
  and leads a trump to kill the ruffing power on the table.

  4♠ bid and made with an overtrick scoring +450. This result assures a
  score that will tie for a top board. +170 or +200 for a spade partscore
  making four or five will be a poor score (usually, below average if no
  a bottom), but it will beat the scores (-50 or -100) for the declarers
  who do not find the heart ruff(s) required to score up the game bonus.
