Contact the club director before noon on the Friday after the game. The director will check for errors entering scores and inspect travelers for unusual scores that may be mistakes. To correct a score in favor of the player reporting a mistake, the director will often request confirmation from the pair whose score will become less favorable as a result of the correction. Yet, when making score adjustments, the director may rule in favor of a pair who keep personal scores when the opponents do not keep personal scores. Land the Game

Most East–West pairs found the spade suit on this hand (good). All (too
bad) either stopped short of game or let the contract get away. Bridge
challenges bidding, declarer play, and defensive play. This one hand
puts all three to the test.

       Possible Auction:

      North    East    South    West
     1*
     Pass 1 Pass§ 2#
     Pass‡ 3** Pass†† 3§§
     Pass 4## All Pass
* West’s hand is a minimum. 3-2-1 points (3 for an ace, two for a king, and one for a queen) can offer a useful guide for opening hands that might rebid in notrump. When a one notrump rebid seems likely, open hands with seven or more 3-2-1 points. With thirteen or more 3-2-1 points, a hand is good enough to open and rebid 2NT showing 18-19 HCP. By those measures, this hand is good enough to open 1 and rebid 1NT. West should open. North should be eager to act if South opens, and East should also open. The East hand has awesome shape with honors loaded in the two long suits. If South gets a chance to open in the fourth seat, a green card should hit the table without delay. South has only ten Pearson Points, no where near the fifteen needed for a fourth seat opening bid. † Yes, six cards to an honor certainly suffice for a club raise. With 3-2-2=6 or 3-3-1=6, East would either raise clubs or offer a notrump response. East’s powerful distribution offers chances for game when West has as little as spade support and Kxx. Adding the A and one other good card could bring slam into view. A minimum range opening might include Q, A, AK, and spade support. East is headed for game and looking for slam. Starting with 1 is best. It probes for the desired spade fit and leaves room for natural notrump rebids by West. East’s powerful shape reduces the deck to 27 HCP (all the black honors and the AK). That means East-West should be in game with the right 13 HCP, slam with the right twenty-one, and grand slam with the right twenty-four. West’s opening, even if it is a minimum, puts the partnership into the slam zone. § South could advertise a red suit two-suiter with either a Michaels Cue Bid (2) or an Unusual Notrump overcall (2NT). Forcing to the three level against two bidding opponents opposite a partner who has passed over 1 accepts substantial risk. South expects to win about seven tricks, alone. Without help from North, the losses in a doubled contract may exceed the value of an adverse game. # West shows spade support, usually with four or more cards, without claiming an above minimum hand. West may hold extra values, but need not have them for this rebid. ‡ If South had risked a two-suited overcall showing red suits, North has the tickets (red suit length and honors with a black suit ruffing value) to answer the call. Under such circumstances, North might have bid at the five-level to pressure the opponents. ** East shares awareness of the black suit double fit with West. Now, a hunt for game or slam begins in earnest. †† If South were to enter the auction this late, the information would probably help East–West play their contract. Worse, the two bidding opponents may have the power to punish any contract North–South might reach. §§ West happily cooperates by showing the heart control with the length as a possible bonus. ## East decides that the slam chances have slipped away. West lacks help in diamonds, and the heart values opposite East’s void are probably wasted. Jumping to game should dampen enthusiasm around the table. This is a rather difficult board for both pairs. Most players must make one or two difficult, close decisions. Yet, East-West should be able to bid and make their spade game. On a good day, North-South may find the sacrifice over 4 in 5 or 5. After that, opportunities to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory soon come into play. --- Playing the Hand --- On the auction above, South probably leads a diamond into East’s spade game. After taking two top diamonds, most South players will probably exit with a small club. Then, East will make four (taking the club hook) or five (rising with the ace at trick three). If South finds the unlikely club lead and East unwisely takes the trick one club finesse, the defenders may seize the initiative, and the first five tricks. In with the singleton K, North returns a diamond to the K in South. A club ruff, a second diamond, and a second club ruff will follow in short order. Five fast tricks to the defense. South’s club lead should be the 5 as suit preference for a diamond return. Any other club lead may confuse North into a poor switch when East unwisely finesses the club at trick one. When East leads a club, a suit bid by West and raised by East, East should think carefully about why East is leading a known adverse suit. Is the club fourth best from K1085? . . . a singleton? The declarer play lessons all say to stop and make a plan before playing to trick one. This hand will reward the planners. - Return to Results, Recap, or Menu. - Return to a Pair Summary by picking an "Untitled" page.
